Workplace accidents are on the rise and they do have important consequences, not only for the workers, but also for those around them. They affect parents, spouses, children, friends, colleagues and employers in a very important way.
The statistics are frightening: In the USA, the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics via OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) reported a total of 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in 2016, a 7-percent increase from the 4,836 fatal injuries reported in 2015.
This is the third consecutive increase in annual workplace fatalities and the first time more than 5,000 fatalities have been recorded by the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) since 2008 (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
There are fatal injuries yes but the number of total injuries is also on the rise: 2,9 millions reported in 2016, close to 8000 per day, 6 per minute! In manufacturing only, 19 percent of the DAFW (days away from work) cases were the result of falls, slips, or trips. The main leading event remains contact with object or equipment at nearly 40% (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
We must remain vigilant and continue to train and educate staff, but also provide tools, both to supervisors and employees, to make our work environments safer.
Every year since 1996, April 28 is celebrated by workers, employers, governments, and ministries of health and safety around the world, in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO), with the common goal of promoting the "culture of security".
At Laxson GPS (South Burlington, VT), we are proud to collaborate and offer solutions to health and safety teams in companies to better protect, locate and communicate with employees, so that everyone can return safe at home after every shift. This Saturday, think of those who have left us but also those we can save in the future! It might be you.
